The era of baroque art in Palermo is seen within the luxury of countless aristocratic houses and also in the exuberance of church ornaments, but also by the clear white colour of stucco decorations.
This is one of the most troubled periods in Sicilian history, when under the Spaniards the city was tarnished by shady Institutions like the Spanish Inquisition. In the same period the official Church strengthened its presence through religious orders.
This is reflected in the complex and colourful marble decoration within the main churches. However, perhaps the idea of perfect devotion is best revealed in the pure white colour of the stucco. The master in this area of craft was Giacomo Serpotta, who was responsible for introducing the many incredible stucco decorations. It’s impossible not to be amazed at the stunning delicacy of his work.
